Self-Advocacy

People with developmental disabilities and family members have often led the way in service system change. Nevada does not have a state-wide self-advocacy organization and needs a strong organization that can disseminate information and organize advocacy efforts for individuals and existing small self-advocacy groups.
Our goals will be to:
  • Facilitate the creation of a state-wide self-advocacy network
  • Provide training for self-advocates
  • Provide technical assistance for start-up self-advocacy groups. We will start by assisting the start-up of a Northern Nevada group and then expand to the remainder of the state. We will be pursuing a VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) grant to fund two people with developmental disabilities to work as coordinators for the region-wide and then state-wide group.
