The VISTA Project
The VISTA project is a collaboration between the UCEDD, Corporation for National & Community Service, State of Nevada Developmental Services and Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living. The project is in its second year of operation and employs 6 VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members, each of whom has a developmental disability. Two members are located in Las Vegas, two in Reno/Sparks, one in Fallon and one in Elko. The goals of the project are:
- Expand the statewide People First self-advocacy organization (we currently have 6 chapters) with a statewide board to coordinate activities
- Advocate for needed changes in the current service system and assist others in advocating for change. This is accomplished through conducting consumer interviews, bringing new people and issues to the People First meetings, and joining community boards/organizations to represent the views of people with disabilities
- Educate the disability community about national and community service opportunities through AmeriCorps* VISTA.
